HEALTHIER SCHOOLS

Many children consume half their daily calories at school, so addressing childhood obesity must include ensuring our kids eat right and have active play in our schools.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is launching the Healthier US Schools Challenge Program to establish rigorous standards for schools’ food quality, participation in meal programs, physical activity, and nutrition education – the key components that make for healthy and active kids. The USDA will be adding 1,000 schools a year to this program. To get your school involved, please visit the Healthier US Schools Challenge website.

In Los Angeles county, the Network for a Healthy California Children’s Power Play! Campaign does outreach and nutrition education to qualifying schools and community youth organizations. For more information, visit the Power Play! website.
